Local Organization Spotlight - York Region Food Network

Updated: Mar 11, 2025

I carefully consider the organizations I volunteer with, ensuring their values and objectives align with my own commitment to community engagement and accessibility. That’s why I chose to volunteer with the York Region Food Network (YRFN).

Their dedication to promoting food security and fostering connections within York Region perfectly resonates with my personal mission.

Through YRFN, I volunteer for the Good Food Box program, which offers residents fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables sourced from local farmers at 19th Ave Market. Additionally, I serve as a co-lead for the Affordable Fresh Food Market, a welcoming space where community members can purchase fresh produce at accessible prices. Beyond offering affordable shopping, these markets provide free beverages and snacks, seating areas for neighbors to connect, and tables for local community organizations to share information about their programs and services.

Outside of these initiatives, YRFN provides several other impactful programs and services:

  • Community Kitchens

  • Community Gardens

  • Food Skills & Education

Every year, YRFN generously supports my community seed swaps by donating a wide variety of seeds—further evidence of their commitment to empowering individuals through healthy, sustainable food choices. Volunteering with YRFN has allowed me to actively participate in creating a more inclusive, food-secure community, and I am proud to be part of their Richmond Hill volunteer team and their ongoing efforts to make fresh, nutritious food available to everyone.
