Where to Donate Gently Used Items in York Region: A Community Resource Guide

One of the best things about decluttering is knowing that items you no longer need can still be useful to someone else.

Whether you're cleaning out a closet, downsizing, finishing a garage sale, or simply trying to reduce waste, York Region has many organizations that accept gently used household goods, clothing, furniture, books, electronics, and other reusable items.

Before donating, always contact the organization directly to confirm what items they are currently accepting, as needs and storage capacity can change throughout the year.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store (TSA)

The Salvation Army is one of Canada's largest charitable organizations and accepts a wide range of gently used items including clothing, books, household goods, décor, kitchenware, toys, and some furniture. Donations help support community programs and services. Certain items such as used mattresses, hazardous materials, and some baby equipment may not be accepted.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area ReStore (Habitat ReStore)

Habitat ReStore accepts gently used furniture, appliances, home décor, lighting, cabinetry, building materials, tools, and renovation supplies. Unlike many thrift stores, they generally do not accept clothing. Proceeds help fund affordable housing initiatives throughout the GTA. Tax receipts may be available for qualifying donations.

Jewish Russian Community Centre Furniture Depot (JRCC Furniture Depot)

The JRCC Furniture Depot provides free furniture to individuals and families transitioning into permanent housing, newcomers, students, seniors, and those experiencing financial hardship.

They accept gently used furniture such as sofas, tables, chairs, desks, mattresses, box springs, and other household furnishings. They do not accept electronics, housewares, or appliances. Donations are accepted by appointment.

Mennonite Central Committee Care & Share Thrift Shop (MCC Care & Share)

MCC Care & Share accepts clothing, textiles, books, electronics, household goods, décor, and furniture. Proceeds support local and international relief, development, and peace-building programs.

Mission Thrift Store (MTS)

Abuse Hurts Donation Program (AHDP)

Abuse Hurts supports women and families rebuilding their lives after abuse. They accept gently used clothing, footwear, winter apparel, kitchenware, household goods, and small appliances.

Please note that some items, including socks, underwear, bedding, and bath linens, may need to be new for health and safety reasons. Furniture may be accepted depending on current needs.

Empowering Moms & Children Organization (EMCO)

EMCO supports mothers, children, newcomers, and families facing hardship. Depending on current needs, they may accept clothing, household goods, baby items, furniture, and other essentials for families in transition. It is best to contact them before donating.

Value Village Community Donation Centre (VVCDC)

Value Village accepts clothing, books, household goods, toys, décor, kitchenware, electronics, and some furniture.

It is important to note that Value Village is a for-profit business, although donations at local Richmond Hill donation centres support nonprofit partners such as Diabetes Canada and the Kidney Foundation of Canada through partnership agreements.

Richmond Hill Goodwill Community Donation Centre (GHCDC)

Located at the Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre, this donation centre accepts reusable clothing, textiles, household items, bicycles, and other reusable goods through York Region's diversion and reuse programs. Acceptance may vary depending on current partnerships and storage capacity.

Don't Forget Your Local Community

Not every item needs to go through a charity or thrift store.

Neighbourhood gifting groups, Buy Nothing communities, and local sharing networks can often connect items directly with someone who needs them.
